June's Book

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Book Club on May 24th

In Island of the Blue Dolphins, O’Dell tells the story of Karana, a Native American girl who survives alone on a wild, isolated island for many years in the mid-1800s. Karana is tested by her environment, even though it is a familiar one. The story is also about what it means to be human: Karana shows emotional and moral courage as she copes with a terrible loss. In the words of one reader, the novel is
“A sad story, yes; but the sadness . . . is of a singularly inspiring kind.”

The Last Full Measure by Jeff Shaara.

"The Last Full Measure is more than another historical novel. It is rooted in history, but its strength is the element of humanity flowing through its characters... The book is compelling, easy to read, well researched and written, and thought-provoking... In short, it is everything that a reader could ask for."

Remember Book Cub on April 26th @ 7:00 - Karen White's

Note: There is another book by the same name about the civil war also. Make sure you get the book by Jeff Shaara.

Ok, ladies last year I ran this alone. It was fun, but it will be more fun if we got a group to do it. It is a family run, so there were all shapes, sizes and ages there. Make it a goal and let's do it.

Planning Meals

I have been thinking lately about our last class on Provident Living and wondering how I can save money. The one thing I thought I could do, is plan more before I go shopping. Thus, I have made a few sheets that I thought might be helpful to others in doing the same thing. The PDF below is to print off and use. (Email me if you want the excel version, so you can fill it in on the computer.) If you have any problems, let me know.

"Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss . . ." Bryce Loski's grandfather tells him. "But every once in a while you find someone who's iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare."

From the moment the Loski family moves into town, Juli Baker finds herself drawn to their young son, Bryce. Even before his family finishes unloading the moving van, Bryce finds himself running away from her, and so their relationship remains for the next six years. All Bryce sees is the weird girl from across the street that lives in a messy house and climbs way too high up the ancient sycamore tree at the school bus stop. For her part, Juli can't get past Bryce's dreamy blue eyes and the scent of watermelon wafting from his hair.

And then comes the day that everything begins to change.

I love this book, it is fun and has a good message. I read it every year to my kids and they are always disappointed when it ends. So, come join us for Book Club on March 29th at Paula's home at 7:00p.m. (if you would like to borrow a book, talk to either Paula or Denice)

The Peasant Queen by Cheri Chesley

An adorable story featuring a strong, determined peasant girl, a dashing, honorable, imprisoned prince, a ruthless, murderous, lustful king, and some amazingly brave maids. Krystal is not one to roll over and do as the men in her life command of her. She is feisty, brave and resourceful.

The author is coming to our book club, therefore we will meet at Denice's house where there is more room. Invite your friends.

“Daughters in My Kingdom”: The History and Work of Relief Society

(Excerpts from By Julie B. Beck - Relief Society General President's talk in the last conference.)

Relief Society Was Organized to Be a Defense and a Refuge
In order to watch over, teach, and inspire His daughters in these perilous times, God authorized the Prophet Joseph Smith to organize the women of the Church. This divinely appointed and priesthood-directed organization is called Relief Society.
The purpose of Relief Society is to prepare daughters of God for the blessings of eternal life as they increase in faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and seek out and help others who are in need.

Relief Society clarifies our work and unifies us as daughters of God in defense of His plan. In this day of mistaken identities, confusion, and distraction, Relief Society is meant to be a compass and guide to teach the truth to faithful women. Righteous women today seek an outpouring of revelation to resist distractions, fight evil and spiritual destruction, and rise above personal disasters by increasing their faith, strengthening their families, and providing relief to others.

History teaches Us Who We are
We study our history to learn who we are. There is a worldwide hunger among good women to know their identity, value, and importance. Studying and applying the history of Relief Society gives definition and expression to who we are as disciples and followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our faithfulness and service are signs
of our conversion and commitment to remember and follow Him. In July of 1830, at the beginning of the Restoration of His Church, the Lord selected His first female leader of this dispensation, and in a revelation to her, He said, “I speak unto you, Emma Smith, my daughter; for verily I say unto you, all those who receive my gospel are sons and daughters in my kingdom.”

The history of Relief Society teaches us that our Heavenly Father knows His daughters. He loves them, He has given them specific responsibilities, and He has spoken to and guided them during their mortal missions. Additionally, the history of Relief Society elevates and validates the standing of women and demonstrates how they work in companion- ship with faithful priesthood leaders.

History teaches Us What We are to Do
We study our history to learn what we are to do. Through our history we learn how to prepare for the blessings of eternal life. The Relief Society as an organization has always had the responsibility to organize the energies of the sisters in the wards and branches of Zion. Through Relief Society meetings, the ministry of visiting teachers, and their combined service, daughters of God are taught, watched over, and inspired in their responsibility in the Lord’s work and kingdom. Ward and branch Relief Society presidents are set apart to direct that work.
